The beginning of August seemed to sneak up on Boone. Time was flying and his dates with Cody hadn’t been that many. But he knew the summer months were the busiest for the guest side to the Wylde ranch.
It was his sister that concerned him. Boone hadn’t heard from Tabitha since she called to tell him she had left Arnold.
He was trying to enjoy one of the rare days he had off from work, tinkering in a small twenty-by-twenty structure he’d built a few years back for his woodworking hobby, when he heard someone pull into the drive.
“Uncle Boone?”
Boone turned to see Sarah Marie turning toward him, a huge smile lighting up her face. “Sprite!”
She jumped into his arms, giving him a bear hug. Boone held her as he watched Tabitha walk toward them. “Hey.”
His sister gave him a smile, but Boone noticed that it didn’t reach her eyes. Tabitha looked worn out and had lost some weight. Her hair held less of a shine and her face looked a bit gaunt. “Hey, Boone.”
Sarah Marie wiggled from his arms and ran outside to greet Duke who was heading toward her, his tail wagging a thousand miles a second. Tabitha entered the cool interior of the shed, her eyes squinting to readjust from the brightness outside.
Boone turned his radio down until it was just a buzz in the background before he turned back to her, pulling Tabitha into his arms. She seemed stunned that he’d hugged her, and then she wrapped her arms around him. “I’ve missed you, Boone.”
Easing back, he waved for her to have a seat on the stool he’d been sitting on. “How are things going with you?”
Setting her purse on the table that was filled with sawdust, her shoulders rose and fell. “Arnold and I are getting counseling. He wants to try harder, be a part of our lives.”
“Well, that’s good, right?” Boone felt his gut twist sideways at the thought of his sister getting back together with that bastard, but he didn’t want to alienate her by giving her his real opinion. Men like Arnold never changed, but Boone held out a glint of hope that the man meant what he said.
She ran her fingers over the roof of the dollhouse Boone had been working on for Sarah Marie. Her thin fingers glided down until she tapped her nail on the table. “It’s good. He’s really trying.”
There was something she wasn’t telling him. Boone could not only see it in her eyes, but feel it like a static charge between them. He wasn’t going to like what she had to say. Glancing past the door, he saw Sarah Marie running with Duke’s favorite toy, a squeaky rubber bone. She was laughing, seeming unfazed by what was going on in her life.
“I moved back home.”
Boone caught the shout of disbelief before it had a chance to crash past his lips. He nodded, tucking his hands into his pockets as he continued to watch his niece.
